Jock Sturges (1947 -) was born in New York City. From 1966 to 1970, he served in the United States Navy as a Russian linguist. He graduated with a BFA in Perceptual psychology and Photography from Marlboro College and received an MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute.

His subjects are nude adolescents and their families, primarily taken at communes in Northern California and at the Atlantic-coast naturist resort CHM Montalivet in France. Sturges primarily worked with a large 8x10-inch-format view camera, until recently with much of his work made with digital cameras.

He has photographed some subjects over a series of decades, tracing their growth into adults, as well as created images of families spanning several generations. Sturges has published many books of his photographs, and his work is in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Denver Museum of Art, the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Museum Ludwig in Berlin, and the Musée de la Louvière in Brussels. He currently resides in Seattle, WA.
